About Isa Eza
I have been a musician for most of my life. I began writing, performing and recording original music when I was young and became a signed recording artist in Japan at the age of 19, with my music released through Pony Canyon, part of the Fujisankei group. Performing as Eza, I was active in Singapore's rock and experimental music scene, playing major live shows and large concert stages as well as recording and producing my own material.
My acoustic song On My Way earned an award from the Berklee College of Music
I'm a multi-instrumentalist—principally guitar, bass and drums—and have always been interested in the complete process of making music rather than simply performing one part. I write, arrange, perform and record my own material, and over the years I have written more than 70 original songs, spanning rock, alternative and experimental music.
Music also led directly into another major part of my professional life: digital content and artists' rights. As the music and film industries moved into the digital era, I became involved in copyright, digital distribution and content protection, eventually serving as Director of Technology Initiatives for the Motion Picture Association/MPAA in Asia, working with the major Hollywood studios across the region on digital rights, DRM, content security and emerging technologies.
So I come to conversations with musicians from an unusual combination of perspectives. I've been the person on stage in front of large audiences, in the studio writing and recording songs, playing different instruments and dealing with a record label—and I've subsequently spent many years professionally dealing with the technology, copyright and digital-rights systems that determine how creative work is protected and distributed.
But music has never really been a former life. I'm still a musician. The technology, academic and professional careers came later; writing, playing and recording music have remained part of who I am throughout.
