Been a drummer for almost my whole life, and have about 4 years of guitar experience. I’m currently focused on my guitar playing and songwriting, using my drum experience mainly to aid me with thinking of drum parts for my songs. For both instruments, my playstyle revolves around a 'less is more' approach. I don't usually try to be particularly flashy, and instead enjoy focusing on the heaviness and raw emotion of what im playing.
Probably the biggest Melvins fan in history after Kurt Cobain, so if you like the Melvins I like you. Easily my favourite band of all time, with Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover being my favourite guitarist and drummer respectively. These guys are by far my biggest influence on my sound. My goal right now is to find people that fuck with a similar style of music and are keen on performing songs that I write/ helping me write songs in the future.
I love writing sludge metal because it's a very heavy genre with amazing songwriting potential without needing to be super speedy or flashy, since my strengths lie more in creating simple catchy riffs and drum parts rather than shreddy thrash stuff (although bands that play that stuff are still amazing, if you don't like Slayer, I don’t trust you). However, I listen to and am inspired by pretty much anything (and I'm someone who actually means that). I enjoy any rock subgenre besides pop punk (unless Descendants count), Folk, cutting-edge Pop (Charli XCX is my shit), any Hip-Hop except Trap and Rage (seen GZA and Big Daddy Kane perform live), Soul, Funk, and some Jazz too (Electric-era Davis fucks). Some electronic favs include Daft Punk and Aphex Twin. Also love my experimental weirdos (Tom Waits, Captain Beefheart, Zappa, Primus Throbbing Gristle, Swans, etc...).
Musically I'm more of an old soul but some of the more modern (2010s +) bands I love include Chat Pile, Earth Tongue (straight outta Welly), Black Midi, IDLES, Geese, and King Gizzard. I dabble in a bit of metalcore on occasion (Knocked Loose and Converge) but mostly leave the ultra-modern metal sound alone just out of personal preference.
The songs I write are on guitar are usually sludge-adjacent, although I usually try to switch it up a lot, with some tracks being more stoner rock, thrash, doom metal, and even some noise rocky stuff. I’m also not afraid of experimenting out into more folk or psychedelic territory for the odd track, since I’m as much of a fan of these genres as I am of metal. I’m very much a believer that music can be heavy without needing to play a 7-string, so my guitars are set to D standard and I mostly write in drop C. I enjoy my odd time signatures, but only occasionally when it feels right for the song.
